Identity project
The ability and wish for imitating is present in
every individual, and with some it might be stronger
than with others. Those individuals are trying
to realize that wish by either finding a new identity,
or erasing and concealing their own one. Both
aims are attained through imitation. The less
satisfaction we have from being our true selves, the
greater is the desire to be like the others. That is
why we are inclined to imitate rather those who
differ from us than those we are closely alike;
those we admire rather than those we despise.
The tendency towards imitation is related to the
risk of losing oneself. Easy believers are easily
lead and shaped. In a time of lack of values, the
freedom of self identification is extremely important
– that is the freedom of being a person.
